Moment Energy achieves first UL certified battery management system

<p>EV battery repurposing firm <a href="https://www.momentenergy.com/">Moment Energy</a> has achieved a &#8220;landmark&#8221; safety breakthrough in its battery recycling efforts, representatives say.</p>

<p>The Coquitlam, British Columbia-based manufacturer announced its achievement of a world first on May 19, as it received UL 60730-1 functional safety certification for its EV repurposing battery management system (BMS). With the removal of that technical and safety barrier, plus its <a href="https://solarbuildermag.com/batteries/moment-energy-completes-fundraising-for-second-life-battery-factory/">latest round of fundraising</a>, Moment officials say the firm has created a clear permitting path for its repurposed products. </p>

<p>Gabe Soares, co-founder and CTO of Moment Energy, says the milestone gives customers, OEMs, auto makers, utilities, and countless other parties some much-needed confidence in repurposed EV batteries. He adds that UL certification will allow these batteries to feature in critical infrastructure applications &#8220;without compromise.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;For too long, the industry viewed second-life batteries as a safety &#8216;wild west,'&#8221; he says. &#8220;This certification reinforces our other safety certifications and proves that with the right technology, repurposed batteries can match purpose-built storage on safety, reliability, and performance.&#8221;</p>

<p>Alongside clearing a path for regulatory standards pertaining to second-life BESS projects, the company says this achievement signals a potentially seismic change in the wider energy landscape.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridging-the-safety-gap">Bridging the safety gap</h3>

<p>Prior to Moment Energy&#8217;s BMS, companies were forced to focus on reverse engineering the <a href="https://solarbuildermag.com/projects/big-opportunities-for-solar-carports-in-u-s-amid-unsteady-market/">EV battery&#8217;s</a> original management system, which of course was specifically built for automotive purposes. The company says that its proprietary BMS will proactively manage the battery cells for both performance and safety. </p>

<p>This practice will provide rigorous safety standards for the batteries, allowing for deployment in <a href="https://solarbuildermag.com/featured/data-center-download-how-hyperscalers-are-shaping-the-solar-storage-market/">data centers</a>, utilities, and other critical infrastructure.</p>

<p>The new certification also strengthens the company&#8217;s existence compliance framework, which includes UL 1974, UL 1973 and UL 9540, officials say. Additionally, the safety standards will establish a foundation for Moment&#8217;s eventual forays into <a href="https://solarbuildermag.com/energy-storage/home-storage-ai-vpps-obbba-and-other-acronyms-shaping-the-ess-market/">AI and machine learning</a>, providing advanced optimization in those projects while ensuring independent safety verification methods.</p>
